Usability engineering

What is usability engineering?
     First of all you must to know who is you user? and where is it install? The usability engineering is use for test and also map project and get result from analysis(possible or not). It can be use for test product to ergonomic(fit to physical user) that depends on
  • Know user
  • Know task.
  • Know the environment :outdoor or indoor
The need for usability engineering
  • To operate.
  • Fun and joy to use.
  • See related product(by survey) compare, adapt & develop with own product.
  • Turn poorly product to well product.
  • Survey market to competing products.
Look back to IT(most based on Software Interface)

  • 30% of IT system are successful.
  • Rest fail because productivity.
Know the user
First you should know who the end user, discover the level of user; beginner or expert, know the system and environment.

End User classes
This can divided into two classifications.
  • Classification by System Usage : Direct user, Indirect user, Remote user and Support user.
  • Classification by Expertise : Novice,intermediate or Expert.
We can classified user by gathering the data
  • Formal or informal discussion.

  • Observation : useful tool to find out how people actually work.

  • Questionnaire : good for subjective responses but less for objective.
          Type of questionnaire : limited set of response like yes/no question. multiple possible response, scalar questionnaire, like scale and ranked order  .


  • Interview : Close questions and Mixed questions.

  • Activity logging : To know what user does? and how long it take?

Task Analysis
Human activity with achieve goal which consist of.
  • An input
  • An output
  • A process to convert input to output
The result for task analysis is often be in graph of tasks or subtasks
