[ASSIGNMENT 3] Interaction Design

Interaction Design

     Interaction Design is the relation between designed artifacts, the social, cultural and business. Content propose by the model as three vital, external interface. It is important to thinking in interaction design. It can leads us for long-term collaborations an exchange of people.

Design research are related with

  • Computer Support Collaborative Work(CSCW)

  • Computer Science
  • Anthropology
  • Sociology
  • Philosophy
The Model
"Design Practice"
     Get the knowledge and discussion for design to evaluate the final artifact.

The activities area

  • Learning to communicate with people.
  • Working under strict and suddenly changing.
  • Negotiating with clients and other stakeholders
The scope of question
  • Reflective : To experience with techniques is used.
  • Proactive : To seeking specific design technique is used.

"Design exploration"
     This similar to design practice. It use synthetic and proactive but it different in perspective which the artifacts is being constructed. Design exploration always excels in problem setting and transcendence.

Aesthetics(Beautiful or harmonic)
     Aesthetics is central concern for interaction design. It also concern whole interaction.



"Design studies"
     Design studies closely resembles traditional academic disciplines. This like study of how designer work, think and carry out design activity or process designer use. It has analytical work for design studies; Design theory, Design methodology, Design history and Design philosophy. The design studies aim to describe and understand rather than create and change.

Moving in between activity areas

      It means moving or drifting in between different positions.
     There are three concepts on tension and movement in model; Trajectory, Loop and Dimension.

"Trajectories"

     The trajectories refer for unwanted drifting in between two or more activity areas. It use simple line with arrows to show direction.

"Loops"(no starting and end point)

     The loops use for to plan for or explain movement. It use circle to show
     Loop also can draw inside of two or more activity in model

 "Dimensions"(Conceptual subset of whole model)
     A specific project usually limit the number of dimensions that are relevant to consider at that time. This become useful and powerful tool in which to introduce design theory.

Using the model

  • The model useful for discussing project when it has multidisciplinary.
  • The model can be used as background to discuss the layout and plan for longer research.
  • Plot a research group's current projects.
  • Differentiate the quality measure.
  • Differentiate the kind of contributions deliverables.

Conclusion
  • An interface towards industry
    • This recognizes and acknowledges long-term collaborations, joint projects and exchange of people between interaction design research and industry.
  • An interface towards academia
    • To making space for reflections in some kind of structured way.
  • An interface towards society at large
    • Based on experience then appears to be inherent power in materializing turn to be products service or space. Channels are available to become a voice in societal  discussions.

[LECTURE 8] Usability Engineering II

Usability metric



     Usability metric use to identify what it is going to measure for change scope of project. The usability metric use for understand user. It can use survey technique for prove "How good is the solution to find feasible or possible." It also can ask user like questionnaire or interview too.
Their are three criteria to define project :

Efficiency

     The efficiency is use for measure time, perform task and number of action required.


Effectiveness 

     The effectiveness use for measure the user problem. It can prove success or failure and also the quality of project.


Satisfying

     The satisfying use for measure user's satisfaction(Is it too difficult for user?). The satisfying base on learnability of user to measure user enjoy or not?


Learnability
     Learnability use for measure how easy it is to learn for use system. less time for learning system is good for learnability. If user use zero knowledge to use system is the best way.


Errors

     The intentional error is the perform action of user but the action was wrong (due to misunderstanding of the system). A slip is unintentional error like clicking wrong button. The errors can categorised in many kind of error such as;

  • Minor errors : easy to find and fix it.
  • Major errors : easy to find but harder to fix it.
  • Fatal errors : error which prevent the task being complete.
  • Catastrophic errors : error which other side effect like lost of data.

Time
     Time is one of measurement efficiency. It simply measure how long it take to perform task.

Usability engineering

What is usability engineering?
     First of all you must to know who is you user? and where is it install? The usability engineering is use for test and also map project and get result from analysis(possible or not). It can be use for test product to ergonomic(fit to physical user) that depends on
  • Know user
  • Know task.
  • Know the environment :outdoor or indoor
The need for usability engineering
  • To operate.
  • Fun and joy to use.
  • See related product(by survey) compare, adapt & develop with own product.
  • Turn poorly product to well product.
  • Survey market to competing products.
Look back to IT(most based on Software Interface)

  • 30% of IT system are successful.
  • Rest fail because productivity.
Know the user
First you should know who the end user, discover the level of user; beginner or expert, know the system and environment.

End User classes
This can divided into two classifications.
  • Classification by System Usage : Direct user, Indirect user, Remote user and Support user.
  • Classification by Expertise : Novice,intermediate or Expert.
We can classified user by gathering the data
  • Formal or informal discussion.

  • Observation : useful tool to find out how people actually work.

  • Questionnaire : good for subjective responses but less for objective.
          Type of questionnaire : limited set of response like yes/no question. multiple possible response, scalar questionnaire, like scale and ranked order  .


  • Interview : Close questions and Mixed questions.

  • Activity logging : To know what user does? and how long it take?

Task Analysis
Human activity with achieve goal which consist of.
  • An input
  • An output
  • A process to convert input to output
The result for task analysis is often be in graph of tasks or subtasks

[REVIEW] TCDC (Thailand Creative & Design Center) & Hello World Exhibition

TCDC(Thailand Creative & Design Center)



     I believe that many people do not know TCDC. I used to be one of them too. But I have a chance to visit one exhibition that created by TCDC.

Who is TCDC
     TCDC or Thailand Creative & Design Center was established in 2004 under government to promote interaction with creative.

Exhibition with TCDC
TCDC has 3 types of exhibition
  • Permanent exhibition call "What is Design?" that explain 10 countries innovative design and explain the renowned of design. 
  • Temporary exhibition : In the day that I visit TCDC has temporary exhibition call "Hello World"
  • Online exhibition
Library in TCDC 

     This library has many interaction for interact with user like touch screen monitor in each book shelf. User can use for search book and find which shelf that this book place. This monitor also provide first page, last page and some sample page for user read before. But this library does not allow user to check out book. They provide a creatively thing that is bookmark to remember number of page. When user go back in next time bookmark will tell the last page that user read before left.

Material room in library
     This room collect samples of material from around the world with information to contact. If user want material user can contact by yourself.


Temporary exhibition "Hello world"

     In this exhibition divided into 4 section; The same,but different, Adopting with adaption, New value from old,New answer to old and A unified world.


The same, but different


     This section lead us with many words like; Backwards or forwards? or The world and us to make us think about thing around us the look same but it has own different.



     New York city, Every movie, series or picture that you found or saw. You may think that all the houses or buildings are similarly with other city. But It has their own different like park, taxi and front door. For another things that can tell this city is New York are Brochure, Book call "Human of New York" and shirt "I love NY". And final this section with some trick with mirror for look back to yourself


Adopting with Adaption

     This section tell me about using the existing and adapt it for proper with situation.



   Soldier cloths that adapt belong with situation



     Toy in chocolate, the existing thing make in cold country. But If they want to sell in hot country? They adapt some packaging for chocolate



     Lucky bag is one trick that shop can clear stocks and buyer have fun with it.



     Hamburger bag, this product for women who want to not to be unlovely while eating hamburger.



     Kit Kat, this product was very popular because new taste and different taste in each country.



Noodle box that developed from candy box.



     SAKE that use rice from Thailand but after reprocess turn rice to be SAKE. It is delicious than SAKE in Thailand.



KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON  brochure for cheer up people. 



     But too much adaption without worry about people or society can cause problem like one of city in China. Now this city has less people live.


New value from old, New answer to old





Using the old things and add more creative idea.



Ink with nice smell(rose)




     Duck in Hong Kong, the duck in bath is the old thing that everyone know but this can be one point for tourist to take a photo.



Polaroid with iPhone or smart phone.



iPad and typewriter. this thing was creatively thing which mixing old thing and new technology.



2nd hand shop, all things in this shop has a message from old owner to tell why they sell it.



     The history of one man that use google earth to back home. I think it was very impressing that one man which use all 10 years to find way back to home.



Heat tech is one of inventory that lightweight and softer that old cloths.



DNA genetic test, You can test and know your own genetic code by yourself.



Anatomy medical application, this application for user who want to know about anatomy for study.



3D printing for print things like prototype. you can draw and print it in 3D.


A unified world



     You can choose your colour of skin. Now it has cream for change colour of skin. It show that everyone has freedom to do everything not even man that want nice eye blow. In Japan it has eye blow product for men especially.



     The last before leave this exhibition, It has big monitor for visitors to interact with it. Visitor can choose hash tag and see things divided in each tag like believe or fun.


     From lecture in room from the director of TCDC. We gain new idea and know the real process of exhibition. Running one exhibition is not easy. It must use many people with different knowledge sometime it failed but you must to know the wrong point and correct it.
